The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) is an intergovernmental organization in the United Nations System. In 1997, ICGEB established its Biosafety Group (now renamed to Regulatory Science) to act as a scientific reference point for its Member States that have ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity and, in particular, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The focus of the Group is primarily the improvement of capacities to ensure regulatory effectiveness in a changing landscape of evolving biotechnologies and human resource mobilisation. The Group has strengthened the institutional capacities of governments and their agencies predominantly in LMICs, and especially in sub-Saharan Africa, Central America and the Caribbean to regulate the products of biotechnologies in alignment with their policy objectives.
